U.S. Supreme Court: California v. United States, 438 U.S. 645 (1978 – PDF)

The federal government and the State of California sued each other over who controlled the filling of New Melones Dam. This United States Supreme Court Decision in 1978 upheld the State of California’s Water Resources Control Board’s Decision 1422 which held that the Bureau of Reclamation must provide evidence of a need for the water behind New Melones Dam before it could fill it.
