April 1975 put in scenes

Location: Camp 9 Put-in
Status: Live River
By: Valerie and Donley Olson
Date: April 1, 1975
Description:

Classic put in scenes during a spring 1975 rafting trip on the Stanislaus River.  At left, loading camp gear into “black bags” – military surplus bags (the big rectangular one was often hard to seal up watertight, and known as a generator bag; the smaller bag was very waterproof when sealed well and more common in the 1970).  At right, a guide is demonstrating how to get your feet downstream if you find yourself swimming in a rapid.  Note the “horse collar” life jackets – they were often the only thing that could be found, but weren’t very effective.
