Article on July 4, 1980 speech by President Jimmy Carter in Merced, supporting the Stanislaus

Article in August 1980 in Stanislaus Campaign News describing President Jimmy Carter’s visit to and speech in Merced, California. In response to questions, President Carter took a bold stance about the Stanislaus, saying, “I believe it is one of the most beautiful rivers on earth… (and if legislation protecting it reaches him) then I would sign the bill”.  This was cheered by the hundreds of river supporters in the hall, but not good news for the many hundreds who were dam supporters.
