The Camp Nine powerhouse in 1908
Photo from Ty Childress’ book, “Bail, Bail…” The powerhouse up above Camp Nine put in, most likely right at Clark’s Flat. The nearby company town of Camp Nine, often called Stanislaus, was founded around 1906–1908 to support the construction of the Stanislaus Powerhouse. When the town of Stanislaus had enough children, a school bus took them into Angles Camp, a 17 mile trip. Construction of Camp Nine Road and related power infrastructure began in 1905, with the town serving as a worker camp and post office for the Stanislaus Electric Power Company It took three shifts of three men to run the power plant, often with the families, until the early 1950s when the plant was automated.
