1976 Protest action in San Francisco
Catherine Fox remembers: “These photos were taken as we prepped to follow Gov. Jerry Brown as his motorcade went through the SF Financial District during his Presidential bid. I was with Don Briggs that day, and as Jerry Brown drove by Don shouted at the top of his lungs “Hey, Jerry”, as he was driven in a car with all the windows down. Brown kinda cringed, but he looked in our direction as we held up Save the Stan signs. Only a few days later, Don and I drove to Fresno (there was someone else in the car) to once again track down the candidate.” The Stanislaus River wasn’t the only focus of Friends of the River in the late 1970s -Auburn Dam, planned for the North Fork of the American River, was a first class boondoggle, but it took major efforts to push it back (work that continued for decades after…). In this set of images, Alexander Gaguine addresses group outside the Civic Center area of San Francisco, as they wait for Gov. Jerry Brown to drive by. Top photo includes Catherine Fox (far left), David and Carol Abelson, Steve Cochrane, Jennifer Jennings (far right). Steve Cochrane is here also. Needs ID for others.
