An article from the magazine “Audubon”, volume 82, no. 3, pages 36-53.  This long and well-written article is a full exploration of the controversy over the dam and includes commentary about the value of New Melones Dam releases helping the lower Stanislaus River near Oakdale.  (The photo of the solo kayaker is Marty Booth.  In the photo with Dick Roos-Collins in the FOR SF office is also David Dickson, Paul Barth? and Don Briggs.
