ARTA 1974 boatman’s guide (PDF)

This very interesting 14 page booklet was created to help direct the guides working for the river outfitter, ARTA, in 1974. It focuses on ARTA’s then-unique approach and philosophy to guiding people on rivers (“..boatmen as agents of social change..” – in this case meaning the changes people often went through on river trips, not political action), and has lots of guidelines for trip logistics. Included are four letters from guides (Bill Alexander, Bernd Kutzscher, Kent Erskine, Chris Downs) outlining from each how they see guides’ engagement with passengers on a trip. It’s a product of the 1970s and a fun read.
