Bryce Whitmore and Wilderness Waterways crew at Parrott’s Ferry take out in 1968
A classic photo of early rafters with Wilderness Waterways, founded by Bryce Whitmore, on the Stanislaus River, at “Old Dan’s”, the Parrott’s Ferry take out for river trips. People in photo, from left to right: John Vail (white towel on neck, later started his own river company), Marty McDonnell (in truck, with red hat, later took over Bryce’s company, renaming it Sierra Mac River Trips), Dorn Crainard (smoking), Bryce Whitmore (in truck next to Marty with white hat); sitting in front is Bob Holland. The photo was possibly taken by Tyler Childress, a Waterways guide.
The truck’s name was Ben Hur. It got that name because Bryce created a rig that, when attached to a jacked up rear wheel, would power a cement mixer as he built his house in the Bay Area – it made the truck look like a chariot.
