Caught in the moment – ARTA guide Phil Town breaks his paddle in Chinese Dogleg

Remarkable shot by Bill Center shows ARTA guide Phil Town at the moment of breaking his wooden paddle in Chinese Dogleg. In the early 1970s, wooden paddles were standard – and they were pretty strong!  But Phil was a former Green Beret who came to ARTA just a month from leaving service in Vietnam and was very powerful (you can find Phil, wearing red neckerchief, and Bill Center in this classic photo). The photo is a black and white image created from an original color slide, which was unfortunately lost at some point.
