Deep Throat Rapid – general location
Description:
Deep Throat Rapid was just above Sierra Club Rapid (shown at the curve in the distance in this photo) and was only present at very high water – over 4,000 cfs. It was a pour-over shelf on river left extending out about 20′ from the bank. Running it was almost certain to result in a thrashing and probably a flip, as it was a deep tube of turbulence (the name is a reference to the Watergate source, “Deep Throat” who was also a reference to a racy movie of the 1970s).
