Mother rapid was formed by rocks and other debris washed out of Yahoo Gulch, which is the gulch just in sunlight on the left in this image. Earliest Stanislaus outfitter Bryce Whitmore named the rapid on Mother’s Day in 1963, in honor of the birth his close friend Maynard Munger’s daughter, Julie Munger (who went on to become a major force in river running and also developing a premiere river rescue school.
